Rites

A Chinese soldier moments before his execution by beheading during the Rape of Nanking - 1937
Immediately after the fall of the city, Japanese troops embarked on a determined search for former soldiers, in which thousands of young men were captured. Many were taken to the Yangtze River, where they were machine-gunned. What was probably the single largest massacre of Chinese troops occurred along the banks of the Yangtze River on December 18 in what is called the Straw String Gorge Massacre. Japanese soldiers took most of the morning tying all of the POWs hands together and in the dusk divided them into 4 columns, and opened fire at them. Unable to escape, the POWs could only scream and thrash in desperation. It took an hour for the sounds of death to stop, and even longer for the Japanese to bayonet each individual. Most were dumped into the Yangtze. It is estimated that at least 57,500 Chinese POWs were killed.

Ray’s a Laugh

Richard Billingham Ray’s a Laugh In 2000, photographer Richard Billingham released a book of his photographs titled “Ray’s a Laugh”. The images document the everyday life of Billingham’s mother Elizabeth and father Ray. The series reveals Ray’s severe alcoholism and Elizabeth’s obsessive collecting of pets and cheap chachkies paired with the poverty they have been forced to live in as a result of Ray’s addiction. Billingham chose to shoot the images on the cheapest film he could find and used a harsh flash to add to the rawness and candidness of the series.  text by Canbra Hodsdon

Autumn mood

I never write sober.
And while being high or drunk I will write like muffin.
Only stupid things.
Fall has come it's raining and it's f****** awesome.
Google is censoring my words.
F*** Google.
I'll drink one more.

Fracul a inventat povestea asta? întreb.
Nu, spune tata, asta e povestea noastră.

"In the Shadow of Leaves"

"By the time Mitsushige passed away in May 1700, Japan had been at peace for almost exactly 100 years. This left the samurai with the same problem facing our modern military: how do you remain a proud, disciplined warrior in times of extended peace?"
